Last week, our own Hendrik Waegeman had the honour of providing evidence to the UK House of Lords, together with Fiona Mischel and Mary Maxon, a unique opportunity to share his insights on 𝗵𝗼𝘄 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗨𝗞 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗦𝘆𝗻𝗕𝗶𝗼 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 and the 𝗯𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗯𝗶𝗼-𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝘆. According to Hendrik:➡ Europe and the UK can be 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗱 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗶𝗹𝗼𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗲-𝘂𝗽 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗲 developed over the past decade, which has helped hundreds of companies advance their manufacturing processes.➡ Currently, 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗶𝗹𝗼𝘁 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗿𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 should 𝗻𝗼𝘁 be the primary 𝗯𝗼𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗰𝗸 for start-ups and SMEs, as 𝗰𝗮𝗽𝗮𝗰𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗶𝘀 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻 𝗱𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗻𝗱 and lead times are short.➡ The 𝗯𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀 in the current economic climate are 𝘀𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 and navigating the lengthy and bureaucratic 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆 𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗵𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗲𝘁 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗮𝗹 for SynBio products. These issues are interconnected, as prolonged approval processes lead to increased financing needs and reduced investor interest.➡ Sufficient 𝗴𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 in the form of 𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗼𝗮𝗻𝘀 𝗶𝘀 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 for SynBio companies to 𝗰𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 "𝗩𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗗𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵" and transition from the lab to real-world manufacturing. Despite the excellent infrastructure available in Europe and the UK, 𝗽𝗶𝗹𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗮 𝘁𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗮𝘃𝗼𝘂𝗿. Within a climate of high interest rates, it is increasingly difficult for companies to raise sufficient funds, resulting in many promising innovations never reaching the market.➡ 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗰𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗲𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘀 to support companies in their scale-up efforts, including the EIC programs, Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU), the Innovation Fund, the Innovation Actions within Horizon Europe, and many more. On top of that, many EU member states have national programs to support higher TRL scale R&D. The UK could particularly benefit from developing specific and similar instruments to help its SynBio community scale up its technologies.

With this video it wants to 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗴𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝘆 𝗻𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝘄𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁: converting 𝗳𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝘄𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗺𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗹𝗲𝘀 to make cleaning agents, personal care products or packaging and this at industrial scale! 🎬 𝗪𝗮𝘁𝗰𝗵 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀: 𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼 📍 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻 📍 𝗯𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗲𝘃𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗻𝗲𝘄 𝗳𝘂𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 where bioeconomy plays an important role. We rented the unit for the first time in 2019 (and decided to purchase it later). At the time it was an unknown technology to BBEPP. It seemed an incredibly complicated unit, I barely understood it 😟. 𝗞𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗻, 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁’𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆?𝗞𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗻: I actually chose the SEDICANTER as it was 💪 a huge challenge 💪 to learn to work with it, to get to know all the 🔎 ins and outs 🔎 and the way it responds and reacts, I spent a lot of time getting to know it.𝗦𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗯𝗼𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗻-𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗦𝗘𝗗𝗜𝗖𝗔𝗡𝗧𝗘𝗥 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝘀?𝗠𝗮𝘅𝗶𝗺𝗲: I think Kevin and I are the ones who can work with it the best, simply because we 🔓 completely understand 🔓 the unit.𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗴𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘀?𝗞𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗻: That the SEDICANTER can 𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗹𝗲 𝗳𝗹𝗼𝘄𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮 𝗵𝗶𝗴𝗵 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗶𝗱𝘀 𝗹𝗼𝗮𝗱 and that all settings can be 🔧 𝗺𝗮𝗻𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗮𝗺𝗲𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 🔧 so one can play around with it. .𝗠𝗮𝘅𝗶𝗺𝗲: And for the DECANTER: 🎢 𝗖𝗵𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗲 & 𝗖𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆! 🎢 The unit is based on an new, innovative technology ready to be discovered by our DSP expertise team.
